And a Jersey conference ‘ambassador’ scheme will be launched in the next few months to encourage residents to use their contacts to win business for the Island.

The Fort has been the subject of a number of in-depth studies in recent years, but none of the plans has attracted sufficient backing. Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean says that although it would be unrealistic to suggest that the States should fund such a project, it could be a viable opportunity for a public-private partnership.

According to the Jersey Conference Bureau, the number of inquiries for corporate conferences in the Island increased last year and the specialists say that with appropriate investment, Jersey conferences could secure up to 45,000 bed-nights during 2009.

What the states need to realise is that renovating the Fort Regent will in itself generate money. We have nothing decent over here for the tourists and the aqua splash well all I can say is that it is an attempt to create something worth while. The Fort Regent could be a fantastic attraction for tourists both for winter and summer and people need to come up with some ideas!

It needs to be revamped as a leisure centre as there is so little for our teenagers and families with young children to do when the weather is bad and in the evenings. When I was a teenager we were always at the Fort (until they starting charging an entrance fee and priced us out).

If private enterprise was involved, it needn’t cost the taxpayer anything – in fact the Island could actually make money out of the Fort for a change.
