Domino’s on its way

An application for a licence to trade and employ up to about 20 staff has been given approval. But it is not known at this stage where Britain’s biggest pizza delivery chain will be based.

It is understood that the person who put forward the proposal to set up the franchise in Jersey was refused a J-category housing licence.

A Domino’s spokesman, Georgina Wald, confirmed that one of the company franchisees had applied to set up an outlet in Jersey. But said that it would be many months before any operation would open. ‘There are a lot of operational matters to be resolved and I would imagine that no decision has yet been made as to location,’ she said.

The decision to allow such a big operator into the Island when there are already nine pizza outlets has been condemned by the owner of a local competitor. Alvin Aaron, of Hot Stuff Pizza in Stopford Road, said that he had just invested £20,000 into his business and knew nothing about the potential entry of Domino’s into the market before doing so.

What a tragedy! Another outlet that is part of large chain, that will only bring a sense of Jersey being an ‘anywhere town’ in the UK, and further away from being the island that is sold as being distinctly continental in look and life style.

This is great news for the takeaway pizza addict. Dominoes Pizzas are a class above what is on offer at the moment and I am looking forward to it! The prices should be easier to swallow as well!

Let’s see how much they add on to their prices compared to a UK store.

More garbage takeaways to add to the obesity problems. Isn’t 9 enough? I remember when Jersey didn’t have Macdonalds and the other imports that the island doesn’t need. Bring on some healthy options.

Good news for the consumer and the whole point of dominos is that they will be cheaper than the others currently on offer. Its all good healthy competition.

I totally agree woth Stomach-Ache, what we want to see is traditional Jersey Pizza, from an authentic Jersey Pizza take away emporium run by a man called Winter Ecobichon.

I think McDonalds should also change to reflect the many local variations on Burgers, for example the famous Grouville “Oyster Burger”.

Its not very fair on Alvin though, they could of told him about this potential Pizza place arriving all of a sudden. Local businesses do lose out with some of these rash decisions.

JTM…errrr why??!! It is none of his business who decides to operate here – it is a business decision made in a business environment by the regulator so should be confidential surely?! If he can’t compete then he shouldn’t be in the business – too many businesses complain when competition is brought in and they need to get in the real world – that is what running a business is all about! If you are more expensive (likely given the lack of economies of scale in Jersey) then you need to up your game and be the best quality – people are willing to pay a bit more if the offering is better. Competition from companies like Dominos means local companies cannot get away with substandard offerings anymore! That can only be a good thing!

Hot Stuff Pizza rocks – they have a discount card system so the price isn’t too painful – they have a variety of meal deals and the staff are friendly. Although I’d love to see dominos pizza here (mainly due to the advertisements on the simpsons… mmmmm pizza) i’d hate to see hot stuff go down because of it. We do have far too many take away outlets here especially for pizza

Dead right Pah – businesses only go under if their product is substandard. Make good quality fresh pizza with homemade base and fresh ingredients and keep the price keen and you will have a sucessful business.

Too many pizza places sell overpriced poor quality pizza, Domino’s will only capture the market if their product is better. Alvin’s need not lose business providing they are good.

About time too. Now all Jersey needs is (1) a decent supermarket, (2) a few other high street stores to bring an end to the dreadful state of the high street and (3) an island wide make-over, because it seems like not many people actually care about how dated the place looks – Bergerac is gone – try doing something else that might make people want to visit the island.
