Six redundancies at building firm

colour-00628288_cropped.jpgBUILDING firm Regal Construction is making six workers redundant as a result of a downturn in business caused by the recession.

This means that the locally owned family firm, which has been trading for 60 years, is laying off just under ten per cent of its 70-strong workforce.

Managing director Stephen Regal said there had been a 40 per cent reduction in inquiries in the construction sector, so the company had to cut staff numbers if its future was to be secured for another 60 years. ‘This is the first time that we have ever had to do anything like this and it is very painful,’ he said. ‘We are not a hire-and-fire business.’

A decorator, carpenters, a labourer and plasterers are to lose their jobs. They have worked for the company from three to seven years.

No problem, the States will just give them redundancy cash. They set that precedent by paying the Woolworths staff. If they refuse, they matter can be taken to court as the States will have shown favouritism.

My friend is one of victim of redundancy in Regal. In his situation, when he lives with family, including two small children it’s tough.
I just wander if Regal Constructin would be so generous and pay to their employees some financial compensation. I’m sure that can go off Regal’s taxation.

Tobias – cynical comment and ill informed, I spent 20 plus years in the building trade and they would have been lucky if they had recieved holiday pay, I never did, certainly not sick pay and definitely not redundancy.

I hope these guys can find work in a tough climate

Keith – I think Tobias’ comment was tongue in cheek.
