Locally bred tortoises are nothing to do with the Tortoise Trust
Wednesday 25th February 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
From Shirley Neely, Tortoise Sanctuary.
I REFER to the appeal made by the Tortoise Trust in today’s edition of the JEP.
I would like to reassure anyone who has bought baby tortoises hatched here in Jersey at the sanctuary, or by other local breeders, that they need not answer this appeal. These locally bred tortoises are nothing to do with the Tortoise Trust, and the appeal does not apply to them. These babies would probably be Hermann’s, Mediterranean spur-thigh and marginated.
Jersey-bred tortoises do not require a licence or certificate of any sort. Nor do Russians or leopards. These last two species do not require papers in the United Kingdom either.
The sanctuary has, in the past, rehomed many Customs-seized tortoises on behalf of the trust and they are now asking for updates on these animals. These tortoises are Russians, leopards and TGGs. No other species. Not marginated and not Hermann’s.
No one need be afraid of losing their tortoises. If you are at all concerned, feel free to phone me on 768485.
