New men to stamp their authority at Jersey Post
Wednesday 25th February 2009, 2:55PM GMT.
A SELF-made multi-millionaire telecoms entrepreneur has been given the job of securing the future of Jersey Post.
Gary Whipp, who only moved to the Island three years ago, has been appointed as head of a new division named the enterprise group and responsible for plotting a course for the utility business in the world of digital mail and online deliveries.
The colourful businessman owns the Club 72 nightspot on the Esplanade, which is run by his wife Tracey, and is also currently chief executive of telecom company Newtel Solutions. Mr Whipp was already a non-executive director of Jersey Post, but will takeover as head of the new division from 1 April.
The other division, the traditional postal business, will be headed by long-serving Jersey Post employee Ian Carr, who joined in 1975 and became operations director in 1999. Since then, Mr Carr has developed and led some major changes in postal services to improve efficiency and quality.
However, the ‘restructure’ will mean the departure of chief executive John Pinel after 14 years in the position. Commercial director Andrew Starkey is also leaving Jersey Post after only 18 months in the job.

PJG – would you propose yourself? Perhaps you think I can do the job? Or your Mum? I know an umemployed chap in Parade Gardens who would love to do this when he sobers up. The really essential thing is that they employ a proper “local”, preferably from St Saviour where Jersey Post is based, and preferably one who hasn’t got a job at the moment, because they would really like one.
This man is qualified and experienced, let him get on with it.
As for J-Cats – the last time I looked you don’t need a J-Cat to get a job but to occupy residential accommodation. Since he has been living here for 3 years I assume he already does so.

Sorry PJP, the Regulation of Undertakings legislation is only window dressing to keep the few remaining locals happy. States of Jersey hypocrisy rules, OK.
Furthermore, to deregulate would cost a bomb in redundancy payments to all the civil servants employed to administer failed States of Jersey regulations.
It all goes back to 1066 when our Duke won that battle outside of Hastings
