Scrutiny to probe dentists’ fees
Wednesday 25th February 2009, 2:56PM GMT.
AN investigation is under way into the cost of dental treatment for the poor, young and elderly in Jersey.
It comes after a States Member was recently quoted £22,000 for dental treatment and forced to select what he had done. The politician, who did not want to be named, said that he could have the same treatment for £20,000 cheaper in Poland. ‘I could have it done for £2,000 there,’ he said.
It is believed that a number of Islanders are going abroad – some as far as Thailand – to get their teeth fixed for half the price.
The Health, Social Security and Housing Scrutiny panel has launched an investigation into the price of dental care concentrating on the young, the elderly and the poor.

Win a share of £10,000
2012 is the year of the London Olympics and to celebrate this great event the Jersey Evening Post, in association with sponsors Ogier is giving all sporting clubs a chance to win a share of £10,000.
I can only assume that the states member is referring to cosmetic surgery which is very expensive. The cost of taking a child to the dentist to receive necessary and not cosmetic treatment should be scrutinized.

Well about time!
For the last two years I have been going to Poland to get all my dental work done, when you add the price of flights it still costs me one tenth the price it costs in jersey.

Well I can actually better the £22,000 quote, just before Christmas 2008 I was quoted £25,000 for dental work.
Needless to say, I did not take up the option.

Being 2009 , why hasn’t there been any investigation into “their” charges before now ?
Dentists in Jersey have been charging as much as they think people will pay for years. Nothing to do with set charges for a particular type of treatment, which they should be doing.
I can recommend Thailand where it’s not too difficult to find an English speaking fully qualified dentist. Even staying in a nice hotel, in between appointments, and the flights you would pay about 15%-20% of Jersey prices all in.
Dentists in Jersey should have a list of charges on show “outside” their premises.

they all charge roughly the same price.the dental hygenist i go wants me to go and have teeth scraped every 3 months as plaque builds up very quickly and i have gum desease,i last went about 6 months ago and she keeps sending me reminders, and as they don,t take anything off for pensioners they will just have to wait a bit longer when i can afford to pay.

Come to the UK and have NHS, I have just paid £140 for top false teeth, they are amazing and the care before and after is just great, I left Jersey many years ago now and thank god I did by looking at the dentist prices anyway, let alone anything else. It is amazing how they can get away with it, but they do and I feel sorry for my parents and family and the rest of Jersey who have to pay these very high prices..
