mono-00597363_2_cropped.jpgEARLIER this month we published a picture which showed a class from Vauxhall School in the 1950s.

The photograph was of pupils of Ronald Lobb’s class at the time. The JEP’s Barry Le Breton did a sterling job of naming many of the boys in the picture, including himself. He said that the photo was taken in July 1955.

Barry clearly has fond memories of the school and his time in Mr Lobb’s class. He said that Mr Lobb, who later became the head teacher at St Saviour’s School and then a lay priest, taught two or three groups of boys at different levels in the same room.

Barry recalls that Mr Lobb had a Morris Ten in which he would transport boys to the FB Fields for sports.

Among the boys whom Barry has not named are the Flageul twins in the back row. Although he knows that the boys were called Winston and Victor, he cannot remember which boy was which.

Barry also remembered that he and other boys went on school trips organised by Mr Lobb, one of which was a week’s tour of Belgium and was featured on the junior page of the JEP in August 1956. Twenty-seven boys aged between nine and 11 went on the trip and for many it was the first time that they had left the Island.

Reader Bob Harvey called to say that he recognised himself in the front row of the picture and was about nine or ten years old at the time it was taken.

And Jimmy Cobden, one of those in the photograph, has since called to identify four more of the boys – Richard Angell, Michael Aubert and brothers Ray and Gerry Bouchard.

The picture was sent in by Vi Norman, whose son Terry is on the end of the back row. There are a number of names missing in Barry’s line-up.
