Don’t use Co-op car park, school-run parents are told

Thursday 26th February 2009, 2:54PM GMT.

mono-00632229_cropped.jpgTHE Co-op has warned school-run parents not to park at its Grand Marché store after they were banned from stopping on Wellington Road when collecting their children.

Parents reacted angrily on Monday when the honorary police launched a crackdown on parents who park on the S-bend outside De La Salle following concerns over road safety. Many said that the move had increased parking problems, with some claiming that they already had to arrive an hour before home time so that they could park in one of the few spaces within the school grounds.

And many others said that they had now been forced to park on yellow lines further down the road, on narrow residential streets or in the Grand Marché car park. But the Co-op yesterday warned that it was monitoring the number of cars at the shop and would take action against any parents who used the car park without shopping at the store.

Jim Plumley, Co-op marketing manager, said: ‘We do not have an issue with people using our car park if they are shopping in the store, but we do have a problem with people using the car park just to collect their children.’

Oh for the days when we Beeches lads were banned from cycling down Wellington Rd, not because of cars parked there, because there weren’t any, but presumably because we might have a job to stop in trime for St Saviour’s Rd.

Make their darlings get the bus or walk.

If they didn’t all have such large cars then a lot more of them could park.

    Serves them all right.

In the UK it is the local authority that has to deal with the school parking issue not the school, so why doesn’t the states take responsibility over here, oh, sorry forgot traffic in Jersey is not a problem !!!

Oh yes Graeme I well remember those halcyon days at Beeches. Always being one for a challenge I once rode my bicycle down Wellington Road at break-neck speed wearing a boater and smoking a pipe. A well known Crown Advocate is still waiting for my 500 lines penalty,I still avoid him to this day. It could have been worse it may have been the instant justice of Brother Tommy’s walking stick.

I am sure many kids are being driven to school when they could be walking. I attended Beaulieu, and then later, Hautlieu. I lived in Grenville street in the ’70′s and walked my two sisters to school every day, rain or shine. I have some lovely memories of dawdling a little and stopping at Wellington stores for a quarter of barley twists or sherbet lemons. Unless they live as far as First Tower or beyond, parents should get their children walking – no Wellington Stores now of course, but just as well with all the computer games and TV they watch. The walking will keep the weight down! ;-)

    Chris Lamy and Graeme:

I believe I was at De La Salle same time as Chris, I had to cycle from H.D. Park area twice a day, and was never taken to school or picked up, I also remember having to toff our hats to the brother on duty as we went through the gates, Some of my friends had to cycle a lot further than I had too, I cannot remember that anyone ever complained.
