mono-00614186_2_cropped.jpgHERE at Temps Passé we are used to the ‘Where are they?’ or ‘Who are they?’ questions in relation to photographs, but rarely is that question posed for watercolours.

The watercolours by Victorian artist H Simoen were brought to our attention by Barry Keene from his eponymous gallery in Henley-on-Thames and are simply called Back of Fort, Jersey, and Jersey. They were in a folio of other works by the artist, who travelled widely in Europe in the 1870s and 1880s, painting in the Channel Islands, France and Corsica.

‘They are beautiful watercolours in wonderful condition, having hardly seen the light of day, as they were kept in a folio. I have absolutely no idea where in Jersey these pictures are of and wonder whether some of your readers may be able to help,’ writes Mr Keene.
