‘Save a life by getting on the bone marrow register’
Thursday 26th February 2009, 2:56PM GMT.
A LEUKAEMIA sufferer from Jersey has joined an appeal to get more Islanders’ names on the bone marrow register.
Simon Wharmby (45) was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia on Christmas Eve 2007 and although recent chemotherapy has been successful, doctors have told him that the only long-term option will be a transplant. He is now asking Islanders to attend one of Jersey’s organised screenings next Thursday and to join the Anthony Nolan Register.
Electrician Mr Wharmby was himself on the register for nearly 20 years after hearing about someone who needed a transplant and he believes the best way to get people interested, and save more lives, is to hear of someone who urgently needs their help.
Two screenings will be held in the Island next Thursday, 5 March, at the La Motte Street Centre between 12 pm and 2 pm and at the Western Fire Station between 4 pm and 7 pm and Mr Wharmby wants as many people as possible to attend.
• To find out more about the screenings, people should contact Angela Coppock-Le Voguer on 858435.
More information about the register and donation process is available at www.anthonynolan.org.uk or by phoning the Anthony Nolan Trust on 0207 2841234.
