Eco-Active has joined the WWF global initiative which aims to get over a billion people to switch off their lights for 60 minutes on Saturday 28 March.

They will also be asking their 37 Eco-active businesses in Jersey to make a pledge for Earth Hour.
The businesses range from hotels to banks to sports centres.

Olivia Copsey, education and awareness officer at the Environment department said: ‘Eco-Active – the States community environmental initiative – is keen to encourage as many individuals as possible from the community and local businesses to switch off their lights at 8.30 pm on Saturday 28 March as a vote for action against global warming.

They should be switched off every night after a certain time. Who needs them at 4 in the morning on a tuesday?

Jersey is a bit short on muggers so that will not be a problem.
I will be very interested to see how dark the night sky is, if the sky is clear and we manage to turn off a lot of lights the starscape should be extra spectacular.

It’s been done lol I remember around 9 years ago a couple of lads wrapped all of the lights up in dark paper – by the time the police came to find them they’d pegged it down the periquage and into their friend’s house…

I have never fogotten it and even writing this i chuckle at the memory…

I think the lights that run around the bay should be kept on until at least midnight for the safety of those who walk, cycle and run around the bay at night. It does make sense to turn them off after that though.
