New rules to protect unqualified lodgers?

And such legislation may make it illegal for a landlord to wander into a lodger’s room without notice.
It may also bring to an end the practice of people being asked to leave lodgings without notice and stop landlords from holding their tenants’ deposits.

It was revealed this week by Assistant Housing Minister Sean Power (pictured) that consideration was being given to extending a proposed new law to the lodging sector to allow an occupant to have a lease on their unit of property.

‘We have to do something about this unfair two-tier housing system that we have and introduce the same sort of protections that are available in other countries before someone challenges our system in the European courts,’ he said.

Thank you, Mr. Power. This is long overdue.

Everyone should have these basic rights. I don’t think Jersey people understand what non-quallified people have to put up with.

True, they could all leave on that proverbial boat in the morning, but, that kind of attitude gets you nowhere. If all the unquallified people left tomorrow, the island would come to a stand-still.

It’s time we treated the people who support this island, who do the jobs that locals do not want to do, by giving them some basic rights. That is certainly not too much to ask.

When I was unqualified i asked my landlord to write out a tenancy agreement… if you have the brains and the charisma you can get the landlord to write an agreement beneficial to you both – most people just can’t be bothered though…

and it does work both ways – on more than one occassion that i know of have unqualified people left the place in a dump and just moved out without telling anybody.
