A bright idea once . . . but it’s time to darken the castle

THE captioned photograph of Elizabeth Castle (Jersey Evening Post, 24 February) regarding the one-hour switch-off of lighting to combat climate change brought back some interesting memories for me.

If Transport and Technical Services would like to reconsider the lighting at iconic buildings like Elizabeth Castle, they may like to recall that the castle has, in fact, only been floodlit during the winter months since 1993.

I was the assistant gardien in residence at the castle during the 1990s, and I must take partial responsibility for the change in policy and the extra electricity consumed. You see, it was my bright idea to put an illuminated Christmas tree on the castle in 1991. This attracted quite a lot of attention at the time and was the main reason why Public Services decided to start running the floodlights all year round.
I would now like to try to reverse this decision.

The Christmas tree always looks more effective with the main floodlights turned off anyway. I think that this gesture would be a great example of cost-cutting in these tough financial times.
