ELEVEN States Members have signed a letter in support of two St Helier No 2 Deputies who face sentencing for breaking the Public Elections Law.

They say the law as it stands is unfair, and particularly restricts old and unwell voters from participating in free and fair elections.

Deputies Geoff Southern and Shona Pitman are due in the Royal Court soon over breaches of article 39a of the law, which covers assistance in applying for a postal vote.

But a group of 11 Members, including two colleagues from the Jersey Democratic Alliance and two Senators, sent out a letter on Thursday backing them, citing Jersey’s Human Rights Law.

The members signing the letter were Senators Stuart Syvret and Alan Breckon, Deputies Paul Le Claire, Judy Martin, Daniel Wimberley, Montfort Tadier, Tracey Vallois, Jeremy Maçon, Mike Higgins, Trevor Pitman and Debbie De Sousa.
