Small local shops will be sorely missed

Saturday 28th February 2009, 9:57AM GMT.

From Vera Moody.
OH, how I agree with Betty Brooke (JEP, 21 February) about the forthcoming closure of the Poundworld shops. These small, locally owned shops will be sorely missed for the type of goods they sell.

With the demise of Woolworths and the joke shop, where else shall we go for our party pits and pieces, and the cheaper foodstuffs and toiletries, most of which are of a good quality?

Surely someone can do something to help keep these shops open, otherwise we shall end up with a ghost town.

I am sure I speak for many of your loyal readers, too, when I say that I shall miss my weekly jaunt and chat with the shopkeeper.

the perfect solution would have been wilkinsons at the woolworth shop where we would have had most items that woolies sold, not another clothes shop,we have nowhere to get these goods from in jersey—thank god for amazan where you can buy a lot of these items at cost price.

Bella, ‘the perfect solution…’ when will Jersey ever get that? It seems anything happening here is the opposite of that!!!!!

Well, when things are cheaper online, what do you expect?

If you are refferring to Horseplay as the joke shop – this is back up and running and was only closed due to the shareholders and directors of the company having a severe disagreement… nothing to do with the credit crunch.

Buy your tins/cans of food online and everything else off amazon or ebay? The local shops over here have such a mark up it’s no surprise they are going out of business.

Linda, exactly. It’s not what we want, it’s what they think we should have. New Look is what the Chamber of Commerce wanted, Not even a consultation with us. It doen’t do much for me – just another run-of-the-mill clothes shop, whereas wilkinsons would have filled the big gap that woolies left, and would have had a quick turnover. They are opening new stores all over the UK as they are so successful.
