St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft is discussing plans for a recycling scheme that could see parishioners separating glass, plastic, paper and tin by May.

He says he is talking to the parish workforce about the scheme, which will require £160,000 in capital spending. Concern chairman Chris Perkins, pictured, said the group welcomed the news – and said it added more strength to the ‘anti-incinerator’ lobby.

‘We are extremely pleased, we have known that St Helier have been talking about this for a while and if we have got our largest parish by population recycling on a grand scale, it is extremely good news for the environment,’ said Mr Perkins. ‘It takes between 17,000 and 20,000 tonnes out of the waste stream, which makes the incinerator that the Constable was against from the word go even more redundant before it starts.

It is about time, we are a small island that should be doing something to help the enviroment. It was a shame when the glass collections stopped from the door in St Helier as there is insufficient bins in the parish. Roll on May I will be ready with the paper, glass and plastics all for collection

    Great news!

How does it make the new incinerator redundant though? Last I looked, Bellozanne was still falling to bits, even if we do start recycling a bit more.
