Cook poised for cap – from Spain
Wednesday 4th March 2009, 3:00PM GMT.
FORMER Jersey RFC and Bedford rugby player Matt Cook could become the first Jersey-born man to win a full senior international rugby cap later this month.
The former De La Salle student has been called up to Spain’s national squad to help boost their World Cup qualifying campaign. Cook is eligible to play having emigrated to Spain nearly five years ago and travelled with the team to Madrid last week for a training camp ahead of their European Nations Cup ties against Georgia and Portugal.
Spain lost heavily to Georgia, 55-11, on Saturday, perhaps no surprise given that Georgia only lost 14-10 to Ireland in the last World Cup finals. Cook missed Saturday’s match through injury but is likely to be fit for the Portugal fixture.
