Family Nursing could lose £5.9m funding

Wednesday 4th March 2009, 2:59PM GMT.

0611620_cropped.jpgTHE Health Minister this morning issued a stark warning to Family Nursing and Homecare’s 7,500 members that he could withdraw the charity’s £5.9m-pound annual funding if they do not get their house in order.

Senator Jim Perchard made the comments in an open letter to the charity’s chairman, Richard Pirouet, in which he states that he has absolute faith in the current management committee.

However, the letter, which is being circulated to members, says that if the current leadership is ousted and he loses faith in Family Nursing’s new leadership, he could withdraw taxpayers’ money.

Health are denying that the letter amounts to a threat to members not to vote against Mr Pirouet at a meeting at the Town Hall tomorrow, when there will be a vote on a motion of no confidence in his leadership. However, it is clearly designed to focus members’ minds on the implications of supporting the rebels. The no-confidence motion has been tabled by a dozen supporters of Ms Huchet, who are saying that the current committee will have to step down if it is carried.

Interesting. In a democratic election the health minister threatens to withdraw funding if he doesn’t get the man he wants in charge.

I am sorry to say that this does seem awfully like a threat to me.
The situation at Family Health and Homecare seems difficult already and I fail to see how this letter is going to improve the situation.
Senator Perchard seems to be upsetting a lot of people for no very good reason.

Having read this it smacks of blackmail and bully boy tactics… but it’s okay as it comes from a states minister.

A case of do as I say and not as I do then.

If the Health Minister withdraws tapayer’s money how will he ensure that people dependent on Family Nursing are cared for?

It’s a little like the States saying to the Minister of Health ‘if you do not get your house in order we’ll take away your budget’

Family Nursing and Homecare are currently doing a lot of care cheaper than Health and Social Security could do it if they had to pay for it directly.
So if Senator Perchard pulls out their funding and the charity has to cut back on their services, his department will have to fill in the gaps at a higher cost or leave old people in need.
The Health budget is already under strain.
Inevitably hard questions are going to be asked of the Senator when the States are next in session, I hope he is ready!

More to the point, not only is he blackmailing and bullying, he is doing it with our money!

It wouldn’t be so bad if he was paying it out of his own pocket.
