No cider with Rosie

From Richard Whatmore.
I WAS delighted to hear of the long overdue crackdown on alcohol by the Medical Officer of Health, Dr Rosemary Geller, and just as plea-sed that she now plans to tackle obesity, presumably by some sort of food rationing. Her reforming ag-enda, she says, consists of five issues.

May I suggest the other three.

She should clearly raise the voting age to, say, 25, and make it subject to a literacy test due to the low standard of school leavers. Next, she should ban all sea swimming around the Island. Far too many people have drowned in the last 20 years. And at the same time she should forbid any visits to the Ecréhous, where the currents are almost always lethal.

Finally, she ought to ban cows because their methane emissions are progressively poisoning the Island’s atmosphere. In order to achieve this eminently reasonable set of health objectives, it would be sensible to have Dr Geller take over the position of Chief Minister from a man who has — incredibly — not come forward with a single one of these measures.

Good letter. My only worry is that Dr Geller may actually take you seriously!

It really shows that we live in a nanny state. They have raised alcohol prices in successive budgets and its made no difference at all. We had “happy hours” and drink promotions banned for years and still no change. Perhaps if this Government took some of the other stresses out of life like taxes then people would not resort to drink the first place?

Dr Geller worries me deeply. I understand that’s she’s only doing the job she’s paid for, but her messianistic zeal bothers me deeply every time she starts her latest campaign.

I earnestly hope she never gets consulted over the population problem!
