Good news and bad on the Stansted link

From Michael de Petrovsky.
SOME weeks ago, I wrote to the JEP stating that Jersey needed a regular air service to Stansted to enable Islanders to make use of the cheap flights from that airport to Europe, while boosting the flow of European tourists to Jersey.

The good news is that Aurigny plans to provide such a service from May onwards. The bad news is, unlike my stated view that there should be an early (Red Eye) flight from Jersey and a late evening one back, Aurigny is proposing a flight that will arrive at Stansted at 4.50 pm and a return one that will depart Stansted at 1.50 pm.

Both these flights are badly timed as passengers will be unable to connect with most of the flights leaving Stansted for Europe and vice versa. The ones they will be able to catch will be very limited. Most will involve overnight stays in England, which will deter a lot of would-be passengers from using the service. Those connections that will be possible, will mean arriving at European destinations late in the evening – not good for families with youngsters.

I would suggest to Mr Cooper, Aurigny’s commercial director, he carries out a survey of the flights leaving from, and arriving at, Stansted and then plans his company’s flights to offer travellers the greatest number of opportunities to connect with both ongoing flights to Europe and returning ones to Stansted.

Furthermore, he will find, in most instances, Stansted ‘handy for business travellers to London’ if such travellers can get up to the City early in the morning and return late evening.

It may be, of course, that Stansted will not give Aurigny flight slots at times other than those mentioned.

Just like the Heathrow link – generally a waste of time.

At least it’s a start, and avoids Gatwick. But the Stansted Express is a joke and also when the need to show passports for Jersey flights comes in that advantage will disappear – Stansted border control is the worst/slowest I have ever come across.
