Jersey bowls duo’s final disappointment
Friday 20th March 2009, 2:59PM GMT.
HOPES that Carole Allen and Gaynor Thomas might become the first players from Jersey to win the British Isles women’s indoor pairs title were dashed in Belfast yesterday, when they lost, 21-8, to Cumbria’s mother-and-daughter duo Cindy and Karen Edmondson.
However, the final scoreline does not tell the whole story, because there was little to choose between the teams for the first nine ends, at which stage the England champions held a slender 7-5 advantage.
Four ends later, the score was 13-5, and a disastrous count of six shots on the 17th end essentially put paid to Jersey’s chances.
‘I was disappointed with my form,’ said Allen with refreshing honesty. ‘I think it’s fair to say we didn’t play as well as we did on the way to the final, but that’s bowls – it’s all on the day!’
