Members of the Island’s Christian Unity Group visited the school to talk about how they support the people of Nyalkinyi, a small village in Kenya.

Two years ago the school provided enough money to pay for concrete floors in some of the classrooms and they are now planning to help out again.

Headmaster Peter Murray said that some of the funds from the school’s annual sponsored walk in May will be used to buy more equipment for the Kenyan school.

‘We were all very moved by the conditions the pupils there have to work in,’ he said. ‘It was great to see things have moved on in the last two years but there is still lots more that we can do to help.’

Meanwhile, De La Salle has been celebrating courtesy this week. Year 6 pupil Joel colour-sup00646162.jpgDe Sousa Luis (right) has been announced as the latest winner of the John Pierce Memorial Trophy for courtesy.

The award, which is presented twice each year, was donated by the Pierce family in memory of John, who died four years ago. His son Charlie is currently in Year 4 at the school.

‘We look for boys who demonstrate on a daily basis the special values the college holds dear, in particular good manners and respect for others,’ said Mr Murray. ‘Joel was chosen because he is a terrific example of what we are looking for. He is always polite and really enjoys helping around the school.’

Speaking about his prize, Joel said: ‘I was so shocked to receive the award but also very happy.
