Top civil servants escape notice

IN the States’ quest to reduce public spending, there appears to be one area that doesn’t come up for examination, namely the senior ranks of the civil service.
Regular news items reveal another chief officer, assistant chief officer, head administrator, etc. Some of these appointments have been made by ministers seeking to expand their own areas of influence rather than adding to the welfare of the Islanders.
It could be argued that the tax take from their generous salaries justifies their existence, but how can it be known whether they are giving value for our money when we’re not told what they do all day and why they do it?
In matters of safety at work it is reasonable that firms are made to take measures to prevent accidents to productive people, but do we really need such levels of regulation in our private lives?
Dr Rosemary Geller seeks to control not only what we eat, drink and smoke, but is also endeavouring to meddle in the lawful business of the retail trade by banning the display of tobacco products.
The manual workers, nurses, teachers and all the hard-working people who are ‘hands on’ and useful have their working days made more difficult by the constant oversight of those in authority.
Individuals have common sense, responsibility and resourcefulness, which is in danger of being undermined by the heavy hand of the law.
