No complaints, says ‘passed over’ teacher

Thursday 26th March 2009, 2:59PM GMT.

JEP70952A DEPUTY head teacher who was overlooked for the top job at La Moye School is satisfied that the correct procedures were followed.

At a meeting with St Brelade Deputies Sean Power and Montfort Tadier, Mark de Luca said that he believed that a ‘proper and open process had been carried out’.

Last week a petition was given to the Education Minister, James Reed, signed by almost 200 parents. It protested against the fact that Jacqueline Bell-Cook, who has been head at Melbourn Primary School in Hertfordshire since September, was chosen for the job above Mr de Luca, who has been acting head at La Moye since last summer.

After being contacted by a number of parents, the two Deputies spoke to Deputy Reed on Tuesday and Mr de Luca on Wednesday. According to Deputy Tadier, both men said that they were satisfied that the correct procedures had been followed.

What a waste of tax payer time… The Deputies didn’t think to make quick phone call to Education see what the fuss was about first?

wouldn’t education be following states procedure? If the deputies are unhappy then they are the ones who can change the procedure.
This should have been stopped the moment it began – with a sharp reply to these parents.

Do you blame them for being a little suspicious of civil service procedure given what’s happened over the past couple of years.

I’m just glad that our elected representatives are scrutinising what’s going on. We should be reassured not outraged!

Here you have two deputies that listen to the public. The public – albeit a smaller portion of it – was not happy with the appointment and petitioned against it. The two deputies arranged to look into the matter and came to the findings mentioned above. And still there are some JOKERS who feel they have to get at them for finally listening and doing something. TYPICAL ! With some people you just cannot win, can you ?

I would say : Well done to the Deputies ! Here is a very good example of Deputies trying to find answers for their parishioners, and being big enough to give the answer they may not have expected themselves.

So much for those that keep saying that Time4Change is radical. Deputy Tadier has it in him to show that his “being radical” is only a picture the Establishment has readily painted of him and their followers are blindly willing to believe. Deputy Tadier is a very reasonable young man who is very critical when he thinks something is wrong, but sensible enough to accept and support something he knows to be right.

Deptuties Tadier & Power actually listened to people and then acted. After finding out all parties opinions and views they asked parents to get behind the new candidate and make it a success.

Whats wrong with that? At least they didn’t impose any cruel taxes or tell anyone to kill themselves or lie to everyone!

Nice. Maybe some of the commentators who wrote earlier this week to express their disgust and badmouth the Jersey resident lady who had been appointed to this job would like to write again apologising and admitting that they were wrong….I won’t hold my breath though.

why try and fix something when it wasnt broke!
Mark is doing a great job as head teacher so why do education feel the need to rock the boat and upset the kids and parents of the school when he wanted the permanant post as head teacher, and now he will be demoted to dep head (hands up who can honestly say they would stay in a place of work after being in charge and then have to take orders from someone else)
I know i wouldnt wana do that!
So in turn La Moye School could lose a fantastic man who is great with the kids and parents (it would be a sad day if that happens)
    All because education dont listen.
Makes me think they are like the politicans!

I am not sure that you understand how school appointments work.

There are lots of nice little sweeteners on offer in the form of temporary promotions. One of the commonest being a temporary upgrade while a head of department is on maternity leave.

The next in line gets a temporary salary boost and a feather in the cap of their C.V.

There is usually an understanding that you then use these as supporting evidence when applying for a higher grade in a different establishment.

Having spent my working life in education I can tell you that internal promotions are not always in the best interest of the establishment and/or the individual however well they have deputised.

Mr De Luca, with his extremely courteous response to the decision, may well understand the way these things happen.

Yes I have been told of odd decisions when it came to promotion times in some of the schools. It is not always the best suited that get the headships.

I once knew of an brillant deputy head at one of the junior schools who got passed over for someone else from another school. The parents commented on what a disgrace it was. As it turned out the deputy head ended up virtually running the school anyway! One has to ask why this happens? Education should always promote the best and nothing else should come into the equation.
