THE Coca-Cola Jersey Football Combination’s representative side won through to the first round of the National League Systems Cup following a deserved 2-0 victory against South Midlands League Division II at Springfield on Saturday afternoon.

It was a game of few chances with neither goalkeeper having much to do and Jersey won with a goal in each half from Chris Andrews and Jack Cannon, the second a penalty kick awarded after a needless trip.

The Combination’s first win in the Systems Cup was down to some solid defensive work from the defence and some good attacking moves down both flanks. The delivery into the penalty areas, especially by Cannon, was also impressive from the home side.

‘Job done,’ said Combination manager Dave Kennedy at the final whistle. ‘We scored a fine early opening goal and then for some reason we sat back a little. Their front two were quick and good in the air and they gave us a few problems in the first half. We spoke about it at the break and in the second half it was sorted and we looked a lot more solid.
