AN appreciative crowd of well-over 300 witnessed the highest standard of tennis ever seen in Jersey yesterday afternoon as the Caversham professional tournament reached its climax at Les Ormes.

Daniel Evans – tipped by Andy Murray to be the next British player to break through on the main tour – excelled in a straight sets win over Cezch Jan Minar in the ATP 50,000 euro Challenger final, which gave Britain a notable double as Katie O’Brien had already lifted the women’s title.

World No 3 Murray, speaking from Miami, said of Evans yesterday: ‘He’s the best one. I think everybody knows that. Challengers is obviously a step up. Dan’s got a chance to be a good player. He’s just got to make sure his mind is in the right place and that he works hard and focuses. He might get there.’

A superb exhibition, it was also a triumph for the iron will of wild card entry Evans, an 18-year-old midlander who has already been included in Britain’s Davis Cup squad, over the talented Minar, an LTA wildcard entry who had despatched seeds left, right and centre on the way to the final.
