Politicians who are not up to the job

Monday 30th March 2009, 1:59PM BST.

From Arthur Carée.
FOLLOWING the recent elections, Ian Le Marquand, who topped the polls, was interviewed by the JEP and quite rightly stated that many of the politicians elected with him were not suitable to undertake the tasks required of them in public office.

As the months pass, we are now able to see what he was talking about. We have two awaiting sentence by the Royal Court having admitted breaking the electoral law. We have an ex-Health Minister who, all of a sudden, is finding serious failings with his previous department and is spending all his time stirring up as much trouble as possible, trying to keep his face in the media.

We have the new Health Minister swearing, advocating suicide and then lying to the House. We have a Chief Minister with no charisma and who, as a previous Treasury Minister, failed to do his job properly and is now costing the Island millions.

The list goes on. We have a minister called away to the UK on important business – or was it to go to the races? We have a boy whose mummy got him elected and we have another whose sole experience with big business was running hire bikes for tourists.

What we really need to do before our half-witted politicians drive all business from the Island is to cut the size of the States down to possibly 12 and pay a top salary of £150,000 or thereabouts. This would then attract the better calibre of politician seen in days gone by that were successful people in their own right, yet served the best interest of the Island. Most departments are run by civil servants, so there is really no need for all of these people, many of whom actually don’t have anything to do day to day.

The Constables should not be involved in Island politics but could remain, paid by their parish to oversee parish matters. Voting should be compulsory for the whole population and compulsory public referenda should be held for all matters of great importance. But there is just no incentive for these folk to reform themselves.

A very true analysis of the current new members of the States. It is obvious that most have only got in for a job and if we upped the salaries then I am sure a higher calibre of people would come forward and a higher number of voters would go to the ballot boxes.

The only decent people in the states are in the council of ministers. The rest are just there for a jolly boys outing.
