Wherry lifts Varsity Cup for Oxford
Monday 30th March 2009, 1:59PM BST.
JERSEYMAN Tom Wherry captained Oxford to a 1-0 victory over Cambridge in the 125th Varsity match yesterday at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground at Putney by the River Thames.
Wherry’s team started well and they had numerous good chances with man-of-the-match Sam Hall scoring what turned out to be the only goal of the game in the tenth minute.
Hall’s classy finish gave Oxford a deserved lead after some excellent football. Hall then squandered a great chance to add a second minutes later when he nodded wide following a cross.
The second half was more even, with Oxford goalkeeper Dwayne Whylly called into action several times. The longer the score remained at 1-0 the more tense it became and Wherry and team mate Toby Hobson were solid in the centre of defence to keep Cambridge at bay.
