GP suspended for misconduct
Wednesday 1st April 2009, 2:59PM BST.
A ST HELIER GP has been suspended for six months after being found guilty of ‘serious misconduct’.
Dr Ian Shenkin, who retired from the Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland Road, last August, was found to be unfit to practise by the General Medical Council.
He was accused of repeatedly failing to diagnose cancer in a female patient, believing that she had irritable bowel syndrome. Patient A died less than a month after the correct diagnosis was made by another doctor.
After a week-long hearing in which former patients gave evidence against Dr Shenkin, the panel found: ‘Your actions in respect of patient A were significant departures from the standards set out in good medical practice and the panel considers that they amounted to serious misconduct.’
