Jersey 1sts take honours

0748447A WEEKEND of hockey success for Jersey was capped off by a clean sweep of wins in the 1st XI inter-insular ties in Guernsey on Saturday.

Guernsey’s men, on a high after reaching the semi-finals of the Hockey Association Trophy while Jersey were knocked out in the quarter-finals, may have been expecting to cruise to victory in the big match, but were certainly knocked out of their stride by a Jersey team that deserved their 5-2 victory.

While Guernsey were left distraught, coach Shelagh Herbert was delighted with Jersey’s first inter-insular victory in seven years. ‘I am absolutely delighted with this convincing win,’ she said.

Jersey’s women also out-muscled the Sarnians at Foote’s Lane on Saturday to retain the women’s inter-insular title. In a flat encounter played largely in midfield, Jersey scored the only goal in the first ten minutes thanks to forward Lisa Phillips’ straight strike at goal from a short corner.
