Last-minute winner gives Jersey third place finish
Monday 6th April 2009, 2:58PM BST.
Jersey Rugby Club beat fourth-placed Hertford 34-38 with a captain’s try in the last minute on Saturday, assuring them of third place in their first season in London Division I.
And according to coach Ben Harvey, it is no more than they deserve. ‘It’s a terrific achievement,’ he said. ‘Full credit to the whole squad because of the number of players we’ve had to use this year.
‘It’s an amazing achievement to go so close to being promoted. I’m certainly happier now than this time last week, but if we had lost today we would have been robbed.
‘We had four penalties against us in the last five minutes but in the 79th minute they dropped the ball, we won the scrum and V [Talite Vaioleti] crashed over. Le Bourgeois’s conversion made it 34-38 and the game was all over.’
