Why not both of them?

Saturday 11th April 2009, 3:00PM BST.

From Don Filleul.
I WAS surprised to read that Deputy Le Hérissier felt so strongly about the fracas between Senators Perchard and Syvret that he thought it reasonable to lodge a no-confidence motion – against only one of them.

My impression, while accepting that Senator Perchard was well out of order if he uttered what he is alleged to have uttered, was that the volume of insulting and personal abuse published in the Syvret blog, was fully mitigating justification for the Perchard response. I must say that everyone to whom I have spoken shares my view and would prefer to see the door closed on the incident.

What purpose is going to be served by this debate? It will almost certainly have to be held in camera if all the murky details are to be fully exposed; it will transform a not uncommonly used expression, ‘you should go and top yourself’, into a formal instruction from a senior authority to commit suicide.

This is clearly nonsense and the number of our over-zealous political representatives who have aligned themselves with this accusation says little for their common sense, let alone sense of humour.

But if the thing is indeed to be dragged through an otherwise dignified debating chamber (at least it was in my days) I hope that someone will lodge an amendment equally damning of Senator Stuart Syvret’s ongoing vituperative and insulting blogs directed at his colleagues. Then will justice be seen to be done.

    Inexcusable

Don Filleul obviously mixes in different circles to us ordinary folk.
Unlike him, I haven’t met a single person who thinks that senator perchard’s foul and offensive outbursts are excusable.

If Stuart Syvret had said these words he would have been expelled wouldn’t he? Unfortunately this is yet another establishment figure trying to bolster a failing government.

If Perchard was wrong why wasn’t he sanctioned for this? Saying what he did was bad enough lieing about it, which apparently has been confirmed by others, is unforgivable as far as I am concerned.

Maybe it is about time those in authority read his blog and reflected on what has been said on it, especially from private perople. Island wide there is a rising ground swell of anger. Carry on as they are and it might well reach breaking point.

It would indeed be a great day for Jersey to see justice done.

Finally it is nice to know that being told to top oneself is only really a joke and wasn’t really meant. Maybe the man himself should have used this excuse and not have someone else speaking on his behalf? I myself call this clutching at straws.

You just do not get it Mr Filleul do you! I do not think you can have spoken to many people then if you find that ‘everyone’ shares your view.
Mr Filleul, I would love to tell you exactly why the majority of States Members and public found the whole episode most distasteful, offensive and hurtful, but for my part I have had my time on the TV and will leave no stone unturned until Mr Perchard is brought to account. Yes, the same Mr Perchard who publicly stated on TV that he would like to meet with me to discuss my feelings and nearly 2 weeks on has made no attempt to make contact.
If this is the sort of ‘humour’ you indulge in as the norm, I can only say it is tasteless, immature and not remotely funny.
I have said before, and will repeat yet again, whatever the provocation, there was no justification for the words, lies and language.
A ‘not uncommonly used expression’?? – sorry, we must live in different worlds Mr Filleul, It is not something I have ever said to anyone ever, and I must say that unless I lead a very sheltered existence (which I don’ think I do), it is not something I hear on a daily, weekly or even yearly basis.
For my part Mr Filleul, I have every intention of sitting in the Public Gallery on the day of this motion with a picture of my much loved, deceased son in my hand.
…….perhaps you now know where I am coming from.

What more perfect example of Jersey’s inward facing echo chamber could one find?

Really, the statement above could apply to most of what is wrong with Jersey in the eyes of the world. This only demonstrates that a tiny number of old boy fools have spent too many generations speaking and listening only to each other, and then closing doors on too many incidents.

Upon leaving the island, this aspect of the Jersey Way will become obvious.

What Mr.Perchard has said is an affront to common decency, which was further compounded by his lieing about it. What more does one have to do to get the axe from this govenrment?

JG, how appalling that Senator Perchard went back on his word, given on camera, still I’m not surprised as he is a self confessed liar (I refute I swore at senator syvret, drat someone else heard it so ok I did swear at sentar syvret but I was provoked and having been found out I now profusely apologise).

This man is unbelievable and must go now.

I was surprised to hear you on the radio, Don, telling Jimmy you saw ‘absolutely nothing wrong’ with his remarks. Glad you now agree they were out of order.

Your ‘dignified debating chamber’ we now know was complacent to say the least.

Stuart Syvret has been forced to take the gloves off but there is more nobility in his stated aims to ensure ‘an effective separation of powers, a completely independent prosecution service, and objective judiciary and high standards of probity and ethics within such services and the police’ than anything we have seen from that chamber in decades.

All power to him and his blog.

Your offended sensibilities and distaste are nothing as compared with those of any victims still seeking justice.

As for Perchard, where is the mans decency and that of those in power who continue to support his tenuous position? The fact he lied should be enough, surely?

Meet one now I agree 100% with Don What Jimmy said or did not say is totally excusable and believe me many, many Islanders feel the same. What damage Syvret has done to this Island is dreadful. He should get out of the Island now if he feels it is so bad and take the rest of you with him. Let us the TAX PAYER get back on with the struggle of building up what he and his followers have tried to destroy.

The chamber of the States of Jersey has been reduced to a mud slinging, name calling, Fred Carnos circus, That is being laughed at worldwide.
In my mind this state of affairs can be attributed solely to the recent lack of statesmanship of Stuart Syvret.
I once voted for SS, I thought he was a young man who had the good of Jersey at the forefront, A man who I could trust to do the right thing in a proper manner.
For a few years he performed as expected going from strength to strength.
Sadly he has now let us all down. He has used the media in an attempt to grab points for his ego, not the good of the island
Perchard was wrong, even though he was pushed to the limit by SSs mitigating antics, he at least had the good grace to apologise for his (in bad taste) whispered aside.
I am still waiting for an apology from SS for the way he stood up and “shouted” an expletive for all to hear, even children .
There are many ways SS could have made Perchard pay for his indiscretion, this was not the way.
I do hope SS stands for Senator again. It will give me, and I suspect the majority of voters the chance to tell him we do not want his sort of selfish headline grabbing politics in Jersey.
But I fear I will be disapointed.
SS will not have the guts to stand up and be counted. but I live in hope.

In principal Syvret seems to have good intentions and I agree with what he is trying to achieve but I do think he has become rather obsessive and is begininning to alienate a lot of those people who voted for him and he may not receive the same degree of support should he stand again.
Perchard was well out of order and the outcome was justified. On this occasion its right that Syvret remain although it wouldnt do him any harm to moderate his stance in order to maintain voter confidence.

I agree with Kate and PJG in points 10 and 11.

In my opinion Syvret is a self-serving, egotistical liability who is only interested in trying to destroy Jersey so that everyone is dragged down to his level of underachieving mediocrity. Most of the people I know agree with this view.
