42nd Street: A triumph for Green Room Club
Tuesday 14th April 2009, 2:57PM BST.
IF you haven’t been to the Opera House to see an amateur production for a while, then pick this one as a reintroduction. Without wishing to gush, I would suggest that you are unlikely to see anything better.
This is a show that could just as well drop the word ‘amateur’. Because Jersey is Jersey, the same names tend to crop up on show programmes — Mark Labey, Sadie Rennard, to name just two — so it is all too easy to forget that the reason they appear so often is that these people are really talented.
And that talent was showcased particularly well in this Green Room Club production of an enduringly popular musical. It might be hackneyed to say that the club are celebrating their centenary year in style, but it wouldn’t be too far off the mark.
Beth Cowan had just the right amount of sugar sweetness for wannabe hoofer turned star of the show Peggy Sawyer, and, although she shone particularly well, it would be unjust not to mention the whole chorus for carrying off a lot of tap dancing extremely well.
Cast: Sadie Rennard, Beth Cowan, Claire Hammond, Liz Birchall, Charlie Cordwell, Agnetta Pinel, Mark Labey, John Ogilvie, Christophe Chateau, Greig McDonald, Jonathan Williams, Mathew Price, Jay Hutchinson, John Rennard. Chorus and dancers: Scott Douglas, Oliver Etienne, Jay Hutchinson, Alison Baker, Caroline de Gruchy, Carol Hamon, Sandra Mathew, Carli Price, Jill Sear, Elsie-May Baker, Zara Blake, Chloe Blampied, Gemma de Gruchy, Philippa Etienne, Katrina Gower, Sophie Hamilton, Jodie Whittingham.
