‘Not the time’ for adverts ban
Tuesday 14th April 2009, 3:00PM BST.
JERSEY retailers are planning to campaign against the next phase of anti-smoking legislation.
The new rules, which are in the final stages of drafting, will prohibit shops from displaying cigarette adverts on their premises.
The Jersey Chamber of Commerce has written to the Health Department and to Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur because of concerns that businesses will lose income.
They say that the impact will be worse because of the current recesssion. Chamber vice-president Ray Shead (pictured) said: ‘The main thing we want to get across is that now is not the time to be doing this – it is crazy.’

Crazy!!
Give me a break. The chamber is worried about falling ciggy sales!! The long term cost associated with ciggy smoking far outweighs any short term sales and tax from sales.
Health related costs due to cig smoking is huge and we don’t even know the effects of second hand smoking.

Humbug. The Jersey Chamber of Commerce looks after profit; the Health Department looks after health.
The day the nanny state starts to dictate profit margins to retailers I will stand and fight; in the meantime the Chamber of Commerce should climb back into its box and close the lid.

No now was not the time to get rid of GST was it??? If the goverment were really serious about the health of its resident population cigarettes would be banned, never mind the conquence of the loss of revenue in impo duty. But no lets make the retailers worry about the loss of revenue.I am a non smoker but used to be, until the goverment put the price of cigarettes up, there was no way I would contibute to the coffers that way. Good on me non smoker for 3 years.

At last Terry has got his correct hat on , but he should also at a stroke, double the tax on the sticks of death.
What a difference it now is since stinking cigarettes have been banned from pubs and restaurants.
As for the retailers of tobacco you will not lose out, your customers who don’t care about their own health and other peoples health when blowing out the poisonous fumes they will still be buying from you whatever the price.
