Tower topple St Clement to bounce back to top flight
Tuesday 14th April 2009, 2:58PM BST.
FIRST TOWER UNITED, once the undisputed leaders of Channel Islands football, have bounced back to the top flight of Jersey football at the first time of asking.
Relegated this time last year, manager Bob Kearsey bore a ‘job done’ smile at the end of this winner-takes-all promotion encounter at St Clement, with his side’s deserved and, in the end, comfortable 3-0 victory cementing promotion behind Championship winners Portuguese Club.
Two second-half goals from striker Stuart Daines, one from the spot, squashed the life out of an earnest, but uninspired, home side.
Having taken the lead through Keiron Lester after quarter of an hour, only rarely afterwards did the young Tower side look in trouble, though they did require a linesman’s intervention to rule out what would have been a second-half equaliser from Adam Claxton.
