Hillsborough…The Island pays tribute
Thursday 16th April 2009, 2:59PM BST.
HUNDREDS of people packed into St Thomas’s Church last night to remember those who died in the Hillsborough tragedy 20 years ago. In a special service led by Monsignor Nicholas France, many people wore Liverpool shirts or scarves in memory of that fateful day in Sheffield when 96 Liverpool fans died and many hundreds were injured in a crush during their 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. Monsignor France said: ‘We had quite a full church for last night’s service, which was an emotional occasion. ‘We had a special wreath on the altar with 96 on it for those who died, and hanging beneath it was the Jersey Liverpool Supporters Club flag. They had a wreath to the side, and so did the Jersey Everton Supporters Club.’ • Picture: Monsignor Nicholas France led an emotional memorial service at St Thomas’s Church last night on.
