States staff numbers rise

Saturday 18th April 2009, 3:00PM BST.

DSC_0052aTHE number of States workers continues to rise, according to new figures released this week.

While many firms lay off staff, the public sector headcount continues to grow, albeit at a slower rate than in the past.

However, warnings have been issued that public sector job numbers may be cut and a pay freeze could be on the horizon. But for many in the private sector a pay freeze is already a stark reality of the recession.

The figures released by the Treasury Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, show that a total of 6,654 employees were being paid by taxpayers at the end of 2008, the highest year-end figure ever.

This story is disgraceful enough but would be seen to be much worse if the J.E.P actually reported its own headline off 18th dec 2003…
“states take on even more staff” an extra 190.
At the end of 2003 the public sector employed 6,400 staff PLUS 1,200 employed by trading committees. The actual number now “being paid by taxpayers” is in excess of 8,000.

I have a good idea to save jobs and money. All politicians who do not listen to the general public should be made redundant and the money used to save the jobs of those people in areas that actually do their job.

Like those filling the lifeboats on the Titanic, folks are scrambling for States jobs as the private sector is increasingly seen as risky….but the truth is we all work for the Govt. by paying Tax.it’s just that they keep people on whether they perform well or not, then there are the all experts to be paid who lose our money for us, and as for the chairman of the waterfront earning more than the U.S.President..and having the audacity to insult the publics intellect by saying he could earn 5 x times that amount somewhere else but because he likes it here he doesn’t take it up…Yeah ! that’ll be right as they say ,who in there right mind woud stay here for a fifth of their worth,no it is simply a case of rip off the taxpayer as we are considered too stupid to stop it…Time to prove them wrong I think….

Maybe more are realising that it is safer being employed by the States than the private sector? At least they don’t just dump jobs when it suits.

Also by employing more the unemployment figures are reduced, we can’t afford 2-3,000 unemployed over here can we?

Does this figure include contractors and consultants? If not it would be interesting to see if their numbers rise or fall year to year?
