Portuguese achieve double
Wednesday 22nd April 2009, 3:00PM BST.
COCA-COLA Combination Championship winners the Portuguese Club of Jersey completed a football league and cup double last night following a late goal to win the PW Touzel Memorial Trophy at Springfield Stadium.
Manny Fernandes’ deflected shot from the corner of the six-yard box struck a defender and the ball looped up and over St Brelade goalkeeper Nick Ashley to secure a 2-1 win.
Junior Muratti goalkeeper Ashley had kept Saints in the game with some stunning saves, the best diving low to his right to push away a powerful 20-yard free kick from José-Manuel Vieira.
Portuguese captain Carlos Carolo said: ‘It was a very lucky goal but overall we deserved it. St Brelade’s goalkeeper was brilliant throughout. We’ve had a very good season. We wanted to finish it on a high and we achieved that last night.’
