In the driving seat: Shaun Rankin
Friday 24th April 2009, 3:00PM BST.
Shaun Rankin, head chef of Michelin-starred restaurant Bohemia, can be seen on The Great British Menu on BBC2 all next week. Passionate about food, he also likes cars.
When and where did you pass your test?
I passed my test first time when I was 21. I was working In north Yorkshire at the time and needed wheels to get to my new job. I lived and worked in London before that so had no reason to have a car.
Your first car?
My first car was a Talbot Sunbeam TI – for those who can remember it! What an amazing car. I bought it from my brother, Lee, at the time it needed much tlc. After two months’ wages and a lot of welding it was back on the road. I had some great but scary times – that car seemed to have mind of its own.
Favourite car?
I think every man can relate to this when I say that favourite cars only last until something else is brought out onto the market. At the moment mine has to be the new Range Rover HSE all-singing and all-dancing and full of those boys’ toys – what a fab motor.
Worst car?
I don’t really have a worst car, but I would never buy a car that has no soul – it’s like a partnership. I know it sounds weird, but to me you have to feel that everything about the car is right, from the way it drives to the way it looks, even down to the interior. Everyone has their own style.
Current car?
At the moment I have a BMW X5 that my wife uses. It’s a great car and big enough to transport the ever-growing family. I drive a VW Caravelle. I love this car, as it’s like a chameleon – you can happily seat seven passengers in comfort or I can drop all the seats down fill it with loads of fishing gear and go off to France for the weekend. It’s great, it even has a fridge to keep the bait cool!
Dream car?
I have to be a bit greedy here because I have two dream cars. The first is a new car, and for me it has to be one of the new Aston Martins. You have to admit it is a stunner. To me it ticks all the boxes – looks, styling, performance. It epitomises what driving is all about. The other car is a 70s Porsche Carrera. It would have to be silver with black leather and I would only take it out on sunny days. I wish!
Favourite drives?
My wife comes from Scotland, so occasionally I get the chance to take the car over and drive up there. I don’t have a favourite road, but I love driving, so it’s nice just to be able to drive for hours and see so many different types of scenery.
Do you think you are a good driver?
I would like to think so. I used to ride motorbikes and I do think it makes you a lot more alert to what is going on and helps you to read the traffic better.
What do you always carry with you on long journeys?
I’m probably like everyone on the planet when I say you need your best music, whether it be iPod or CDs. You have to have your favourites with you for long journeys.
What makes you angry when you are driving?
There has to be one thing that really makes me angry and it’s people who don’t indicate – I find it lazy and rude. And then they wonder why they are involved in accidents (it’s not as if we can read minds, is it?).
What do you listen to when you are driving?
I love listening to classical music on the way home from work, but really loud. If I have had a busy night it helps me wind down so that when I get home I’m not still running at 60 miles an hour.
How could Jersey’s roads be improved?
I wish the roads that cause the problems on the Island would be tackled head-on instead of just being ignored.
Do you clean your car, and if so, how often?
I should clean my car a lot more than I do, but I just don’t get the time, so I’m waiting for my son, Ethan, to get a bit older so he can start to earn his pocket money!
• The Great British Menu starts at 6.30 pm on Monday 27 April, on BBC2.
