MYSTERY still surrounds the baby found washed up on a Weymouth beach 27 years ago wrapped in a Jersey carrier bag.

Dorset detectives received five calls after reviving the case last month, but there are currently no developments or new lines of inquiry to follow.

They are now concentrating on carrying out detailed forensic work on the bag that the baby was wrapped in which they hope may help solve the mystery.

Officers believe that the baby was possibly strangled by its mother and thrown from a ferry from Jersey to Weymouth, before she was washed up near the Pier Bandstand in Weymouth on 15 October 1981.

Why are the Dorset Police persuing this case? They must have recent cases to solve or too much time on their hands. If they cannot prosecute the person, what is the point?

I recall that when the re-opening of this case was originally reported a few weeks back, the Dorset police indicated that they had some positive leads and that it would be preferable for the ‘guilty’ party to come forward, rather than the Police knock on their door.

However, this is clearly not the case, the police have very little to go on.

While the details of this crime are harrowing, it really must be a case of letting sleeping dogs lie. Jersey back in the 80′s had many seasonal workers, and abortion was illegal in the island.
