A FRENCH fisherman was seriously injured in Jersey on Saturday after being caught in the machinery of his boat while working on it.

It is understood that as he was sat on the driveshaft of his fishing vessel, it started to move, mangling his legs and severing a main artery.

The 38-year-old man was flown to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital for treatment after being lifted from the engine room two floors below deck by firefighters and paramedics at 8.40 am.

The man, whose fishing boat was moored at Victoria Quay after a night spent fishing, had been straddling the propshaft, which powers the boat’s propellers, when it is understood to have started to rotate, causing him to get his leg caught.
