Swine flu: We’ve got the medicine, say Health

Monday 27th April 2009, 2:59PM BST.

DSC_0084JERSEY has stockpiled enough medicine to treat all Islanders if there is an outbreak of swine flu, Health chiefs have said.

The announcement was made after an emergency meeting at 8 am today, which brought together all those involved with health and emergency planning.

It followed news reports over the weekend that more than 100 people have died in Mexico from the new strain of influenza. So far cases have been noted there and in the USA, primarily in California, Texas and Kansas.

However, a statement released by Jersey’s Medical Officer of Health Dr Rosemary Geller (pictured) said: ‘There have been no confirmed cases in the UK or Jersey, and the World Health Organisation pandemic alert level remains unchanged at three, which means that infections were mainly in animals, with a few humans contracting the disease.’

Dave (1) that’s no problem at all, as long as we’ve got enough for the offical residents that can be bothered to declare themselves. Anyone living here illegally can just take their chances as far as I’m concerned, we owe them nothing and if they choose to not be a part of our society and not pay their dues then they can hardly expect us to look after them if they get sick.

Time to take a long and dispassionate look at alarming media reports, circulating the world.Stocks of expensive Tamiflu anti viral medication in Jersey are about to exceed their sell by date as they will shortly do in many other countries.Pharmaceutical company shares have been bolstered by this news.Is this purely coincidence? I would hope not.

ok Boris, will do: Who lives = people that are here officially and thus pay into the Social Seccurity system, thereby ensuring that they are provided with adequate health care if needed.
Who dies = those that choose to live here parasitically, happy to take whatever they can but not prepared to pay Social or tax etc.
Bet they’ll be worried when the first cases of flu start appearing here.

Tobias – I am amazed by your black and white attitude to life. What is your viewpoint regarding legitimate visitors to the island? Would you class them the same as the “illegals”? How would you react if it was someone you loved, visiting the UK and the attitude were the same?

Life is a precious commodity and one to be cherished, regardless of race, colour, creed, status.

I look forward to hearing your comments.

Heh Tobias wouldn’t all the Beans living on benefits and not paying tax or social security be excluded as well ? Interesting …

Some firms, including the one I work for, have paid privately for stocks of Tamiflu for all staff and so we would not need to take from the States stock. They did this back when bird flu was splashed all over the papers a couple of years ago.

I fail to see why some individuals have deemed my comments to be harsh, when they are only realistic.
“Regardless of race colour creed or status” how is this relevant? How is it a race or class issue?
As far as I am concerned, ANYONE who pays their due is entitled to healthcare and will have nothing to worry about. Those few that elect to leach off society by taking cash-in-hand and not paying their way, will not be entitled to free medicines. That’s nothing to do with their class or colour etc. Whether they are Jersey crapauds, British, Portuguese, Polish, Swahili, Outer Mongolian…if they don’t want to pay their way, then they can take their chances when the ship goes down
Such comments as “what if it were someone you loved” is really irrelevant.
By the way, this certainly does not pertain to visitors – again, this is irrelevant. I’m talking about the ones that live here off the radar and are only here to take as much as they can before Income Tax or Social catch up with them. We owe them absolutely nothing.
The decent folk in Jersey will have nothing to worry about if and when this killer flu reaches our shores – as stated by Public Health, we have enough medicine to treat all Islanders.

The World Health Organisation has released a statement that it would take at least 6 months to invent an anti viral drug to combat this new strain yet our nameless Health ‘chiefs’ seem to think they already have stockpiles of the stuff.I am surprised WHO hasn’t contacted the Jersey Authorities and asked for the recipe.
