Flashback to last year’s Siam, as Jersey’s Talite Vaioleti discourages the attentions of a Guernsey defender
FOUR games, three defeats and the second oldest trophy in the rugby playing world still in the possession of Guernsey RFC.
That is Jersey fans’ painful tale of the Siam Cup since 2005. In recent years Jersey have lost more heavily than they have won.
However, tomorrow afternoon at St Peter two ‘foreigners’ to Island rugby are hoping to bring it home.
One is ‘V’ (Talite Vaioleti), the Jersey 1st XV captain who was part of a Jersey team which, last year, gave in too quickly and, in hindsight, too easily.
‘We’ll have no excuse to lose this year. Last year we had played our hearts out to win promotion,’ he said. ‘That first time, I didn’t really understand its importance. Now I’m married to a Jersey girl and feel part of the Island way of life. I understand what it will mean to be part of a Siam Cup winning team.’
