Preserve this day’s integrity
Wednesday 6th May 2009, 3:00PM BST.
From Mick Morris.
LIBERATION Day should not be a matter for negotiation; it should continue to be honoured as our national day.
The town being closed on Liberation Day is making a statement that it is a very special day. It is one of the most important days in Jersey history, whether we were here for the Occupation, our parents or grandparents were here or we have since become resident.
The argument that as money is short we need to open shops for longer hours seems a bit unlikely, as many of the businesses that have failed opened as many hours as possible.
Surely gratitude and tradition should still take precedence over profit, in this case.
After I contacted the Constable of St Helier and the president of the Chamber of Commerce back in February they both gave assurances that, due to receiving so much negative comment, ‘the integrity of the day’ would be preserved and the town would remain closed.
