Shaky start to bowling challenge in South Africa

JERSEY’S men, who are hoping to use the Atlantic bowls championship in Johannesburg to qualify for the next World Bowls championships in Adelaide in 2012, have made a faltering start to their challenge.

Derek Boswell and Cyril Renouf, who were runners-up in the pairs in Ayr two years ago, were pipped by Israel and Guernsey in their openers, but bounced back, and chalked up wins over the USA and Namibia.

Alan Shaw, John Lowery and Terry Allen, opening with a 20-12 defeat at the hands of a strong-looking Irish trio, defeated Cyprus, 19-16, but slipped up again against the USA yesterday afternoon, when a thunderstorm sent players scurrying from the green.

Lightning presents a real hazard in South Africa, and the organisers called off the session – then caused pandemonium by decreeing the games should not be finished, and the results should stand with scores as they were.
