JERSEY’S most elderly residents can now get UK travel insurance after Age Concern announced it will cover all Islanders following the scrapping of the reciprocal health agreement.

Hundreds of pensioners feared being trapped in Jersey after local insurance firms revealed that they would not supply annual insurance to people aged over 89 travelling to the UK.

But Age Concern Enterprises, which handles insurance for Age Concern in the UK, today said that it would provide cover for any Islander of any age.

However, the organisation said that its underwriters were reviewing the ‘level of cover’ it offers following the end of the reciprocal health agreement.

Daphne Minihane, chairman of Age Concern in Jersey, said that it was welcome news to hundreds of concerned pensioners who had been contacting her organisation on a daily basis.

It looks like the Jersey authorities aren’t bothered about tourism, as I expect there will be a lot of elderly people who will no longer be able to visit due to the very high health insurance costs!

My parents have finally managed to arrange insurance cover through Saga, but I’m not sure how much longer they will be able to afford to travel over here, as it is just costing them more each time.

Also, Flybe don’t seem to provide insurance for anyone over the age of 65 on their flights, so these people aren’t covered if there is an accident or cancellation, unless they are covered by their own insurance!
