Channel Islands students celebrate Liberation Day at Brighton University

CHANNEL Islands students took a break from university life this weekend to remember those back home.

Young people at a number of colleges around the UK joined forces with other Island students to organise Liberation Day celebrations.

One of the largest of these events, attended by 50 Channel Islands students, was held in Brighton on Saturday. As well as students from both the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex, the event was also attended by Jersey girls Rosie Waggodd and Kim Forbes who travelled all the way from Liverpool and Leeds to be there.

The Liberation Day celebration was organised by 22-year-old Guernsey student Nicolas Cranch – the University of Brighton’s Channel Islands Society president.

‘We’ve all grown up with Liberation Day as a national holiday, but in England, May 9th is like any other day.’ he said.

‘It’s a time when us Channel Islands students all wish we were home with our friends and family. This is the next best thing.’

The event was held at Varsity Bar on the town’s sea front and included food and drink funded by the university. Students all wore white, red and yellow.

‘It was a great night spent reminiscing about old times with old friends,’ added Mr Cranch.
