Having a ball with the Jersey Militia
Monday 18th May 2009, 3:00PM BST.
MILITIA balls, it would seem, were well-attended and formal affairs.
This photograph is labelled as being taken at such a ball in June 1938 and has been sent in by Mr G Fenton, of St Brelade.
He writes that the ball was held at the West Park Pavilion and featured the regiment of Sherwood Foresters, who were over from Guernsey.
The names he recalls from those photographed are as follows:
Front row (from left): Lt Col HM Vacher, Beryl Vacher, unknown, Mrs Anthoine, unknown, unknown, Major Anthoine (the Constable of St Saviour), unknown, unknown, unknown, Carlos Mitchell.
Second row (from left): 2nd Lt G Fenton, unknown, Gordon Rice (who, writes Mr Fenton, was the first English solicitor in Jersey), Anne Halton (the daughter of the government secretary and married to Dr Lewis, who wrote a book about Jersey during the Occupation), Johnny Crill (the older brother of the former Bailiff, Sir Peter Crill).
