The Mikado: Fantastic!
Wednesday 20th May 2009, 2:55PM BST.
THE opening night of many a stage show is rarely hitch-free, but the Jersey Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s first performance of the Mikado was, most certainly, an exception.
The problem with trying to write a review when a local group is as good as those involved in the society’s latest production, is that the reviewer will appear to be gushing. So, stand by to hear me gush.
The first night was excellent. Star of the show was undoubtedly the Lord High Executioner, Ko-Ko, played to the hilt by an exuberant and very funny William Millow. That is not to say that the other soloists were not impressive, they were, without exception, extremely good.
The society is blessed with an astonishing number of quality voices, in all ranges, soloists and chorus – which doesn’t happen all that often in an amateur production. The show continues at the Opera House until Saturday and is well worth seeing – you will certainly enjoy it.
