EU ‘more important’ than UK

GUERNSEY’S Chief Minister has called for a joint Channel Islands presence in Brussels.
Deputy Lyndon Trott said this week that although there were times when both Jersey and Guernsey needed ‘to plough their own furrow’, there would come a time when the European Union would become more important to the islands than the United Kingdom.
Speaking to members of the Jersey branch of the Institute of Directors, Deputy Trott also said that he favoured a joint auditor general covering both islands, who would probably find that there were different savings to be made in each.
Guernsey’s States are this month being asked to approve borrowings of £175 million of capital funding. The island’s Chief Minister, who has a career background in the financial services industry, said the current economic climate was a ‘perfect environment’ in which to borrow.
